R&D Laboratory HYLEtech
Custom Production Facility
Art & Design
Develops and innovates the industrial process. Combines art, design, and architecture through HYLEtech technology, redefining construction boundaries.
It is the first design, art and architecture project using HYLEtech technology
InOpera refers to “putting into operation” new forms of design starting from the new HYLETech matter. InOpera transposes matter that contains a light of its own and realizes the dream of alchemical work: creating starting from matter that has become light.
InOpera has entrusted Emanuel Gargano with the Compositions collection.
With Compositions, we perceive an object and its aura; the boundary of an object is governed by the intensity of the light it radiates. Light thus contributes to creating a form rather than simply illuminating it. Compositions radiate islands of light that attract, repel and interpenetrate each other. The ichnography, the plan, becomes a sky map.
In Gargano's Compositions, this boundary is ungovernable: the objects project light from within, which spreads into the surrounding darkness. The form is therefore composed of a peiron and its aura: the boundary that embraces the body is not, as in Aristotle’s view, immobile. The works are not illuminated by the patterns of an external light source; they themselves become masses of light that seem to expand the space rather than be contained by it.
The numbering of the Compositions follows an arithmetic progression based on the number 7. Seven are the planets. Seven are the aspects of what we see: body, distance, shape, size, color, movement, and rest. Seven are the types of movement: up, down, forward, backward, right, left, and circular. Plato composed the soul out of seven numbers. Seven are the vowels, seven the alterations of the voice, seven are the ages of life: child, boy, adolescent, youth, man, elder, old man. (Iamblichus, The Theology of Arithmetic). For Emanuel Gargano, the essential meaning of seven concerns the light—the aura—that expands the perimeter of the object of the Compositions.
The Compositions reveal what the Kirlian effect shows only under laboratory conditions (when an object placed on a photographic plate is connected to a high-voltage source): Emanuel Gargano does not use cuts of light. The light in the Compositions has a hypnotic quality: if a beam of light reveals, implying a clear perception of the object's 'immobile boundary,' the light in the Compositions radiates circularly and resembles the hypnagogic glows that invite one to consciously enter the dream.
From the essential geometry of Gargano's works, resulting from the decomposition of a square and its diagonals, ideograms were drawn:
Compositions thus generate a language. And hence in addition to being a composition of light and matter, the works are compositions in the typographical sense of the term (in traditional printing, the typefaces are arranged in the compositing, and we speak of composing a page). In short, the space that contains the Compositions also becomes a sign-typographic space.
After studying at the ISIA (Institute of Higher Education in the Artistic Industries) in Urbino, he moved to London, where he collaborated with leading designers, working on the interpenetration of light and emptiness. Currently, his professional life is divided between New York and his studio in Assisi.

The Triennale exhibition (April 8 to 13), with a collation of works designed by Emanuel Gragano. InOpera presents HYLEtech: new material, center of orbit for unprecedented technical and perceptual possibilities, new ideas for design, art and architecture. For Plato, hyle is the original matter that can take any form. HYLEtech is matter made of aluminum and light, a kind of fifth element. HYLEtech's inner light is a light that, from the center of matter, expands like an aura. The boundary of an object is governed by the intensity of the light it radiates. Light thus contributes to creating a form rather than simply illuminating it. Products and works become light that has taken on a thickness – light thickness.
